New on TV this week
If you haven’t yet watched Hulu’s hit The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, should you? You may want to consult CableTV.com’s Binge or Cringe series, where we break down the pros and cons of newish TV series in a longer format than you get here with What To Watch. So far, we’ve covered The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives and Netflix’s The Perfect Couple, with wildly different results.
This week’s What To Watch picks include the final season of Superman & Lois, the return of Abbott Elementary, new sci-fi thrillers Citadel: Diana and Teacup, the debut of anime series The Do-Over Damsel Conquers the Dragon Emperor, and Motul Petit Le Mans sports car racing action. So much TV!
New on The CW this week
Superman & Lois | The CW | Drama, fantasy
Season 4 premiere, Monday, October 7: The last of the DC Universe series on The CW, Superman & Lois will join The Flash, Arrow, Stargirl, Supergirl, Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, Gotham Knights, Black Lightning, Naomi, and iZombie (whew) in the TV dustbin when its fourth season concludes. Unlike its predecessors, Superman & Lois is a straight-up family drama, with Superman/Clark (Tyler Hoechin) and Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) raising sons in Smallville—it’s way more eventful than that sounds. New on ABC this week
Season 4 premiere, Wednesday, October 9: Remember when ABC had all the sitcoms? Now it’s down to just Abbott Elementary, lodged between The Golden Bachelorette and the ABC News docuseries Scamanda on Wednesdays—not cool. On the upside, Abbott Elementary will have a crossover episode with, of all shows, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia this season, according to Abbott star/creator Quinta Brunson and Sunny star/co-creator Rob McElhenney. Why not work in Welcome to Wrexham, too? Watch trailer
New on Crunchyroll this week
The Do-Over Damsel Conquers the Dragon Emperor | Crunchyroll | Anime
Series premiere, Wednesday, October 9: When she’s sentenced to death by the crown prince, who’s also her fiance, Jill travels six years back in time to their engagement party. (Time travel, sure, but a six-year engagement? Absurd.) Once there, she quickly changes her fate by proposing to the first person she sees, who turns out to be her mortal enemy, Emperor Hadis. One meal later, Jill believes she can fix Hadis: “I’m going to reform … No, I’m going to make you happy!” Now the title makes sense. Watch trailer
New on Prime Video this week
Citadel: Diana | Prime Video | Drama, action
Series premiere, Thursday, October 10: The Russo Brothers’ mega-budget sci-fi spy thriller Citadel didn’t get great reviews in 2023, but it did attract eyeballs. Citadel: Diana, the first of several international spinoffs, takes the action to Italy, where Citadel agent Diana (Matilda De Angelis) desperately seeks a way out of Milan and the spy life. Can she trust Edo (Lorenzo Cervasio), heir to the evil Manticore empire, to help her? Sidenote: Diana’s asymmetrical bob is a-maz-ing. All six episodes drop on October 10. Watch Trailer

New on Peacock this week
Teacup | Peacock | Drama, horror
Series premiere, Thursday, October 10: Peacock isn’t divulging much information about Teacup beyond that it’s produced by James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring), stars Yvonne Strahovski (The Handmaid’s Tale), and is based on Robert McCammon’s 1988 sci-fi horror novel Stinger. In the book, a malevolent alien presence terrorizes a small southern town, and early glimpses of Teacup point to a similar plot. Two episodes of Teacup will stream on Peacock weekly, concluding on Halloween (of course). Watch trailer
New on STARZ this week
Sweetpea | STARZ | Comedy, drama
Series premiere, Thursday, October 10: When marginalized young woman Rhiannon (Ella Purnell, Fallout) finally snaps and murders someone, she doesn’t regret it. In fact, she’s discovered her bliss (you know the saying, “Live, laugh, lop off a head”). Sweetpea is a U.K. import that’s been called a “coming of rage” story, but the most shocking part of this pitch-black comedy might be learning that the all-American star of Fallout and Yellowjackets Purnell is actually … British. Sweetpea moves to Fridays next week. Watch trailer

Can she find the mysterious author before it destroys her career? Disclaimer, written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón (Roma, Gravity), also stars Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron Cohen, Lesley Manville, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Squid Game’s Hoyeon Jung. New movie releases available to rent/buy on VOD this week
Depravity (2024)
While you weren’t paying attention, former Nickelodeon kid star Victoria Justice (Victorious, Zoey 101) grew up and moved on to more adult roles in movies like Trust, The Tutor, and the new crime thriller Depravity. When three apartment building tenants (Justice, Taylor John Smith, and Devon Ross) become suspicious of their reclusive neighbor (Dermot Mulroney), they break into his place to discover a trove of stolen art. Then they “accidentally” kill him, setting off a nightmarish chain of events that definitely live up to the title of Depravity. Watch trailer
