2025 Big Ten Football Championship Game preview

Nothing interests me more than the fact that Ohio State and Indiana are the only two undefeated college football teams left in the United States of America. These are also two teams in the same conference that didn’t play each other this season, so there’s no real information on which might win other than statistics and styles of play.

I took a deep dive into each team’s players and numbers. You can make your own predictions on who will take the Big Ten title from there.

Ohio State

The Buckeyes are considered the No. 1 team in the country by the Associated Press. No wonder—the team beat opponents by an average of 29.3 points per game and put together two shutouts.

The air game is what the Buckeyes hang their hat on, led by quarterback Julian Sayin. He’s tallied more than 3,000 passing yards and 30 touchdowns. Relatedly, receivers Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate average 85.6 and 79.3 receiving yards per game, respectively.

Ohio State doesn’t run a ton. But Bo Jackson is the team’s lead running back by a mile. He averages 86.5 rushing yards per game.

Where this team really shines is on the defensive end. The Buckeyes allow fewer than 10 points per game, which made me do a double-take when I saw that number. One way they’ve done it is by allowing the fewest scores in the country within the red zone.

Indiana

The Hoosiers obviously haven’t been messing around this season, either. Their No. 2 ranking is legit.

Indiana has one-ups on Ohio State in key offensive metrics, and are right there in some defensive ones. The key for the Hoosiers this season, however, has been their run game.

Indiana’s quarterback and top running backs have scored at least six rushing touchdowns each. Roman Hemby, Kaelon Black, Khobie Martin, and QB Fernando Mendoza should see a lot of action against the Buckeyes’ staunch defense.

The defensive end is also a calling card for Indiana, which is third in the entire country in tackles for loss.

By the numbers

Stat Ohio State Indiana
Passing yards per game 267.0 254.1
Rushing yards per game 171.5 229.8
Points scored per game 37.0 44.3
Rushing yards allowed per game 81.7 79.2
Passing yards allowed per game 121.3 172.5
Points allowed per game 7.8 10.9
