Technology has come a long way over the past few years. It kind of feels like whenever you buy a new device – computer, laptop, tablet, phone – a better version of the one you just bought is coming out next week. It’s kind of unfair, but those are the breaks. Technology is advancing faster than we can keep up with it and we just have to sit back and accept it.
One of the benefits of advancing technology is that pretty much everything these days comes already equipped with built-in wireless capabilities. Smartphones, tablets and especially laptops, usually all have built-in wireless capabilities. A lot of desktops still require a grounded Ethernet connection and there are a few of the older models of laptops that never took the logical next step of installing wireless inside.
This isn’t a problem, it’s merely a tiny, solvable inconvenience. There are a number of wireless adapters on the market. Most of the time, they’re just a little USB stick that you can carry with you in your laptop bag, take out, plug in and you’ll be ready to go. There are a few differences though, depending on what you want to do on the Internet.
If you’re just trying to check your email and send a few messages on Facebook and Twitter, the basic wireless Internet adapter will suffice. Those are sometimes less than $10 and will work just fine. If you’re looking for something that will help you play online games and download a lot of stuff you’ll want to get something a bit more expensive. It’ll work better for you, but keep in mind that if you’re trying to use something like this at a coffee shop or somewhere with a lot of other people pulling from the same connection, it might not work as well as advertised.
Netgear offers a wide variety of different wireless Internet adapters, and pretty much all of them are as simple as plugging into your USB drive. An older laptop will most likely require software installation, but those generally come with detailed, step-by-step instructions that make it as easy as possible.
It seems silly to have to address this, but just because you have a wireless Internet adapter, you still need an Internet connection to use it. There are a few different ways to achieve this and a lot of them are cheap.
Coffee shops, café’s, libraries and many other public gathering places usually offer free wireless connections to their guests. Those are probably the best options if you don’t have an Internet plan at home, and if your laptop doesn’t have wireless capabilities built in, a wireless Internet adapter will solve that problem. If you’re someone that’s going to be on the Internet quite a bit, having a connection established in your home is probably the best and easiest bet.
If your laptop has trouble connecting to wireless, don’t worry about having to shell out hundreds of dollars just to check your email. Simply head to the nearest electronics store and pick up a wireless Internet adapter. They’re cheap, easy to use and widely available for pretty much every single laptop.
