Jenelle Evans announced that she was expecting her second child in early December.
For the last few years, the Teen Mom 2 star has been attempting to tame her wild ways and regain custody of her son, but instead of going to school, starting a career, and going through the custody process, Jenelle has gotten arrested a handful of times, gone to rehab, gotten married, and split with her husband.
At the start of 2013, Jenelle was married to Courtland Rogers and pregnant with his baby, but she suffered a miscarriage in early January. From there, she and her husband went their separate ways, only to reunite months later. At that point, Jenelle told fans she was working on her marriage and happy with Courtland. Then, in April, the pair was arrested for heroin possession and Courtland, who couldn’t make bail, remained incarcerated until August.
Following the arrest, Jenelle told fans she was unaware of her husband’s drug use, despite being addicted to the drug herself just months prior, and opted to separate.
Now, Jenelle is dating Nathan Griffith, an MMA fighter from Myrtle Beach, and the two are expecting a baby, the second child for both parents (Nathan has a daughter from a previous relationship and Jenelle is mother to 4-year-old Jace). And while the parents are both thrilled with the news, fans everywhere have reacted to the news with shock, and even disgust.
Because Jenelle hasn’t yet regained custody of her first child, it just doesn’t seem fair that she would bring another into the world. At this point, Jenelle isn’t even paying her previously ordered child support, so what qualifies her as being ready for another child? Shouldn’t she be concentrating on her responsibilities to Jace?
The whole thing is extremely disappointing and it could also be sending the wrong message to other girls in her position. After all, Jenelle is looked up to by many fans of Teen Mom 2, and when her fans see her having a child, giving that child to her mom, and then having another child, all while failing to pursue an education or career of her own, the message MTV aimed at sending is lost.
Back in 2009, when MTV first launched 16 & Pregnant, which was followed up with the Teen Mom franchises, their goal was to discourage teens from unplanned pregnancies. But with Jenelle’s multiple pregnancies (in addition to Jace, her pregnancy with Courtland, and her current pregnancy, Jenelle was also reportedly pregnant this summer but had an abortion), and the pregnancies of her co-stars, the message could be getting lost.
After welcoming twin girls in late 2009, Leah Calvert went on to get pregnant a second time in 2011 with Jeremy Calvert, her now husband, but miscarried. One year later, she was pregnant a third time and welcomed daughter Adalynn Faith in February 2013. Kail Lowry welcomed her second child with husband Javi Marroquin in November 2013.
At this point, the only Teen Mom 2 star who hasn’t been pregnant a second time is Chelsea Houska. All the other girls have expanded their families and while Kail and Leah’s financial situations allow them to do so, the young fans of the show may not be able to distinguish the difference and simply see these girls are having more children at a young age and are in the spotlight for it.
Hopefully, the show will continue to spread a good message to fans and not glorify the idea of continuing to have children at a young age.
Teen Mom 2 returns to MTV on Tuesday, January 21 at 10/9c.
