“Winter is coming” may be the most recognizable and reiterated quote in Game of Thrones thus far, but there is no shortage of quips and rhetorical digs throughout the show. Co-creators (and show writers) told Mother Jones, “We’re under no contractual restrictions with regards to the storytelling… So for us, it’s about adapting the books according to our notions of justice—which won’t mesh with the fundamentalist book fans’ notions.” This makes sense.
There is so much material that a GoT fundamentalist would get hung up on that would create an impasse for the show’s production. (And if you are one of these fundamentalists, check out the Good Reads feed of quotes from the books.) Original author George R.R. Martin is also listed as a writer, so the show can’t deviate too far from the source. There have been some stellar one-liners on screen and we want to know which one you think packs the most punch. Eddard (RIP): “The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword.”
Every Lannister: “A Lannister always pays his debts.”
Jon Snow: “First lesson, stick them with the pointy end.”
Jaime Lannister: “The things I do for love.”
Daenerys Targaryen: “Fire cannot kill the Dragon.”
Lord Varys: “Power resides where men believe it resides; it’s a trick, a shadow on the wall, and a very small man can cast a very large shadow.”
Cersei Lannister: “When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.”
