They’re smart, sassy, and sexy: Melissa McCarthy, Lena Dunham, Rebel Wilson, Brooke Elliott and Christina Hendricks have not only excelled at entertaining us, but they’ve helped us broaden our horizons of what we call beautiful. Forget those Skinny Minnie TV actresses that have basked in the spotlight for so long and let’s embrace these five fabulous ladies with curves. Or, as we like to call them, real women.
1. Melissa McCarthy
After years of working as a relative unknown in the shadow of famous cousin Jenny McCarthy, Melissa McCarthy made her breakout TV perfromance on “Gilmore Girls,” followed by the big-screen smash, “Bridesmaids.” Since then, she’s been on a roll with follow-up hits such as “Identity Thief,” “The Hangover: Part III,” and costarring with Sandra Bullock in “The Heat.” She currently stars on TV in “Mike & Molly,” and got rave reviews for her smoking hot cover on “Elle” magazine.
2. Lena Dunham
One would be hard-pressed to think of Dunham as plus-sized, as she appears to be just a normal size woman. And yet, there’s been such a fuss about all the nude scenes in her HBO series “Girls.” She’s funny, she’s smart, and she doesn’t suffer the comments lightly, recently chastising a reporter who asked her about the nudity on the show. Being comfortable in your own skin is sexy, as is being smart. Dunham isn’t just the star of “Girls,” but the main writer, as well.
3. Rebel Wilson
The Australian-born Wilson has found success on the big screen along with McCarthy in the smash “Bridesmaids,” and now graces the TV screen in her series “Super Fun Night.” This lovely lady made a name for herself with the sassy comebacks she often throws around, but what you may not know is that Wilson has a law degree from the prestigious University of New South Wales, where she graduated from in 2009. Not just a pretty face; this girl has brains too.
4. Brooke Elliott
The plot of “Drop Dead Diva” is described as “a vapid aspiring model killed in a car crash gets brought back to life as an intelligent, overweight lawyer, hoping to find the meaning of inner beauty.” It may sound like a nightmare to some, but for Elliott, it’s been a dream come true. Being cast as an “overweight” character hasn’t phased her a bit, and she’s embraced the role. “The majority of women in America look like me,” says Elliott. “It’s one of the things I love about the show.” She proves that this drop dead diva can be drop dead gorgeous.
5. Christina Hendricks
This red haired beauty has drawn comparisons to Marilyn Monroe, with her old-school curvy figure and a role on the retro smash hit, “Mad Men.” When Hendricks made her first big splash on TV with the series in 2007, one could argue she started the trend for seeing healthier, more voluptuous women on TV. The actress has received numerous accolades, including being ranked # 87 in “Men’s Health” 100 Hottest Women of All Time in 2011, and coming in at #14 on Askmen’s list of the top 99 most desirable famous women for 2013. It’s good to see the boys getting on board with sexy going beyond a size 2.
