Looks like it might take Rookie Blue’s fan-favorite couple Sam (Ben Bass) and Andy (Missy Peregrym) longer to reunite when veteran cop Marlo Cruz (Rachael Ancheril) begins working at 15 Division this season. Ancheril spoke with CableTV to discuss what its like playing Marlo.
Q: Tell me a bit about your character.
Ancheril: Marlo is a senior officer with nine years’ experience on the job, the last few years in SWAT. I consider her a tough bird who can be hard on everyone and perhaps the hardest on herself. She puts on a coat of armor to protect herself, but she’s a real caring person underneath it all.
Q: What do you think attracted Marlo to Sam? What do you think makes them work as a couple?
Ancheril: I think Marlo gravitates to anyone that is as focused on the job as she is. Her work is what she lives for, it’s her passion and her primary focus. Any relationship she has in her life, including her family and friends, has to respect that priority. As for working as a “couple,” it’s just as Sam says, “simple, uncomplicated,” which is exactly what I think Marlo wants, too.
Q: In the promo for episode 403, it looks like she is going to have to deal with the aftermath of killing someone?
Ancheril: 403 was a great episode, I can’t wait to see it. It was the first one we shot. The best thing I can say is you’ll have to wait and see. As for filming emotional scenes, every situation is different. Generally, I tend to turn to music and photography a lot.
Q: What has been the hardest scene to film this season?
Ancheril: There were a bunch that were challenging, but working on 403 was probably the hardest. Being new and filming my first ep on a great show. I woke up absolutely terrified the first day of shooting!
Q: Here are some Twitter questions. Kazza169 wants to know what it is like kissing Ben Bass?
Ancheril: Ben is a great cat, but any kissing scene is always daunting for me. It’s really uncomfortable with lots of people watching, and I am totally not a PDA person!
Q: Debbie asked if you think Marlo believes Sam when he says him and Andy are in the past?
Ancheril: I think there is something to be said for a woman’s intuition. However, I also believe that if you are with someone, and happy, you’d like to be able to trust what they are saying to you.
Q: Nina said she has heard some great stories from fans who have met you on set. How have your fan encounters been?
Ancheril: Really great. I couldn’t believe the kindness of these fans. I’ve said this before, but it’s definitely worth saying it again: The passion the fans have is unbelievable and absolutely amazing, and I am grateful that they have been so happy to meet me, and so supportive. Makes a girl grin ear to ear!
Q: Gina asked if you think Marlo has picked up on the Sam and Andy chemistry and if that will affect their relationship?
Ancheril: I think the audience has been privy to the relationship and moments of Sam and Andy much more than Marlo has. In fact, three years worth of it. Marlo may have heard about her, but would you tell the new person in your life all the details about the love of your life? Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt, my friends. That was cheesy, I know.
Q: What’s one funny Rookie Blue behind the scenes story you can share?
Ancheril: Off the top of my head and from an episode that has aired, when we were filming the “jogging” scene, I was around the corner on the trail, and some hardcore cyclists all decked out in gear came zooming around and almost declared war on the police officer who asked them to stop. Note to self, don’t mess with Toronto cyclists. They are serious.
Q: Anything you would like to say to your fans?
Ancheril: Thank you! From the bottom of my heart. There have been some fans who have supported me right from the get-go. I appreciate the support as an actor. Marlo may be a lone wolf, but Rachael is a pack animal.
