Google TV is a Smart TV platform developed to create an interactive experience between the viewer and Google’s website. The television platform integrates the Google Chrome browser, which provides a way for users to access content and access networks such as HBO and CNBC.
To take the television experience to the next level, developers began working on a set of applications that would help users view content in a more user-friendly way. The top three applications that every user must download are Netflix, HBO GO, and Amazon.
Netflix lets users watch as many TV episodes and movies as they want directly from the television set. No need for any additional hardware or services besides a Netflix subscription, which can cost as little as $8.99 for unlimited streaming.
The company also plans on giving users the ability to control their apps on TVs and connected devices with their mobile phones. According to a spokesman, that plan is coming soon. “Our overall strategy around second screen control is that Netflix on TV devices is a great viewing experience, but Netflix on mobile devices makes activities like browsing, searching, rating, and social easier. We see our users doing this naturally today and are trying to support and optimize for that behavior.”
Regardless of what’s to come, if you are into binge-watching television shows, streaming movies, and watching comedy specials, downloading the Netflix app is a must.
HBO Entertainment is also trying to branch out into more than just on-demand programming by offering a completely redesigned application. This app is designed to bring instant access to every episode of every season of the best HBO shows, movies, sports, and documentaries.
Like Netflix, only HBO subscribers will have access to the content. However, once logged in, viewers will be able to stream everything, including access to exclusive bonus materials, full soundtracks, and casting information.
“HBO will bring access to hundreds of hours of programming to Google TV with HBO GO,” said Google in a blog post. “Authenticated subscribers will soon be able to access all of their favorite HBO content on demand and in an enhanced website for Google TV.”
The bonus content, interviews, and music make this download worth it for any current HBO watcher.
The newest app is Amazon On Demand. It gives entertainment addicts access to over 75,000 titles to rent or purchase. In addition to classic movies and television shows, you can even order episodes of television shows that aired the day before.
There is no downloading or waiting, all the content is stored virtually and will begin streaming after purchase. There are also free titles offered throughout the platform.
Amazon explained the process on their website saying, “All broadband-connected Google TV devices can play videos from Amazon.com Video On Demand. To start watching, press the ‘Home’ key on your keyboards to access the home screen and select the Amazon Video On Demand channel from the left bar,” said Amazon. “Or access the entire Amazon Video On Demand store by visiting http://www.amazon.com/vod from your Google TV.”
Google TV was designed to bring the content to the viewer, and these apps certainly do that. By downloading these three apps, pop culture buffs will have access to more than 100,000 movies and television episodes on demand.
