Courteney Cox and Matthew Perry were known as Monica Gellar and Chandler Bing from 1994-2004, and by some, will be known as The Bings forever. However, since wrapping Friends 10 years ago, they have both moved on to other roles. For Courteney, her most recent claim to fame has been her series, Cougar Town.
Cougar Town premiered on ABC on September 23, 2009 following their stand-out hit Modern Family. Following the first season, the series was renewed by the network for two more years until the rights were purchased by TBS. From there, the show aired a fourth season and recently announced plans for a fifth, during which Courteney will be joined by her former Friends husband, Matthew.
“Details on his role haven’t been announced yet, aside from the fact that he’ll appear in one episode,” E! News reports. “[Courteney]‘s character is married on the show so we know he can’t be playing a love interest for her, unless Cougar Town really wants to shake things up.”
This won’t be the first time Courteney and Matthew have reunited onscreen following Friends. Back in April, Courteney made a guest appearance on Matthew’s short-lived NBC series, Go On, where she starred as a potential love interest for Matthew. Unfortunately, the relationship didn’t work out and neither did the series.
With his appearance on Cougar Town, Matthew will become the third former Friends star to be seen alongside Courteney. During season 1, Lisa Kudrow made a one-episode appearance as did Jennifer Aniston during the premiere of the second season.
As for a Friends reunion in the future, several members, as well as the show’s co-creator, have made it very clear that it is not something fans should be holding their breath for. “I don’t think so,” Matthew told ABC News when asked of the possibility. “It would be terrible to do something and have it not be good. It was so terrific. If we did a movie and it sucked, then it would, you know, blemish it.”
Friends co-creator Marta Kaufman was more direct. “I’m going to clear this up right now. No! Not happening,” she told E! News earlier this year. “‘Friends’ was about that time in your life when your friends are your family, and once you have a family, there’s no need anymore. I’d rather people go, ‘Oh please, please!’ than, ‘Oh, I can’t believe you did that. It was horrible.’”
Cougar Town returns for a fifth season on Tuesday, January 8 on TBS.
